European AI Chats on EU Servers: The Best Alternatives

Scale from US infrastructure to AI chats run in the EU, with DentroChat at the European end

TL;DR: DentroChat is the most powerful AI chat built on a fully European stack: an EU company, servers in the EU and Switzerland, and no US subprocessors. The other options here are Lumo (Proton, Swiss law), Euria (Infomaniak, Swiss law) and Camocopy (EU servers, but a rough interface). A server location alone is not enough: check who owns the infrastructure.

AI chats in Europe have mostly been overshadowed by ChatGPT and Claude. But things are changing faster than expected. If you work with personal data professionally, use AI for customer contact, or simply don’t like the idea of your prompts landing on servers owned by US giants, there are now alternatives.

What can you actually get, what does “EU infrastructure” mean, and where do these tools still lag behind the US market leaders? We take a closer look at all of this in this article. Spoiler: there are quality gaps, but in many cases they are smaller than you might think. And the privacy advantage is worth considering in certain cases.

Why European AI Chats Are Getting Interesting Now

Until recently, the choice was simple. If you wanted an AI chat, it was usually ChatGPT or Claude. Accept the terms and off you go. That’s fine for private use, but if you handle personal data at work, it no longer works under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). And whether US servers are safe at all is a wide-open question. Over the last few years, this has led to a growing field of European AI chats. Services like DentroChat and others have moved into the spotlight as a result.

The Problem with ChatGPT and Claude

Both services run on US infrastructure and are therefore subject to US law. The EU-US Data Privacy Framework has existed since 2023, but its legal stability is still being questioned. For companies that enter customer data, internal documents, or other sensitive content into a chat, this creates a real compliance risk. On top of that, since the EU AI Act took effect, the AI labeling obligation under Art. 50 applies, which has added even more regulatory pressure.

EU-Hosted vs. EU Company

It’s important to understand that a server in Paris may still belong to a US parent company. That matters, because US authorities can access data in individual cases, regardless of where the servers are located. If you really want data sovereignty, look at both of these points:

  • Server location inside the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA)

  • Company headquarters and parent company in the EU

  • A transparent privacy policy that explicitly mentions AI processing

  • Optionally, a data processing agreement (DPA) with the provider

Only if both hold, a European company and EU hosting, are you on the safe side.

DentroChat: The No. 1 European AI Chat

If you want an EU-hosted AI chat, DentroChat is definitely right at the top. The company behind it is DentroInnovation OÜ, based in the EU, and your data never leaves Europe. No US subprocessors, no American cloud hosting, no data flowing across the Atlantic.

What Can DentroChat Do?

The feature set is broader than you might expect from a European provider. DentroChat offers text chat, image generation, voice input, file uploads, and web search in one interface. There are also three conversation modes: Fast for quick answers, Thinking for deeper analysis, and Creative for more generative tasks. It’s not a watered-down ChatGPT clone, but a full-featured everyday assistant.

Data Protection and Server Location

Compared with Mistral Vibe, the big difference from many others is this: no US companies have access to your chats and payment data. The servers are located in the EU and Switzerland. If you want more than GDPR compliance “on paper” and a truly European AI chat in practice, you have an option here.

Lumo by Proton: Place 2

Almost everyone in the privacy world knows Proton, ever since ProtonMail made encrypted email accessible to ordinary people. With Lumo, Proton has applied the same approach to AI chats. According to a technical analysis by PacketNebula, saved chats are secured with zero-access encryption, so even Proton cannot read the content. The catch: while your prompt is being processed, it is briefly decrypted on Proton’s servers and then discarded. That means your prompts are not end-to-end encrypted the way your Proton emails are.

More private than ChatGPT, but not zero access.

Integration into the Proton Ecosystem

If you use ProtonMail, ProtonDrive, and ProtonCalendar, Lumo is an assistant that fits right into that ecosystem. Lumo relies on Swiss law for its infrastructure and privacy. That’s different from pure EU providers, but it’s still a very solid legal framework. So if you want a complete privacy suite rather than an isolated AI chat, this offers something holistic.

Euria by Infomaniak: Place 3

Infomaniak (known for hosting in Switzerland) also offers Euria, its AI chat. It’s very privacy-minded: no profiling, no training on your data, and the entire infrastructure runs on renewable energy. That sounds like marketing, but it isn’t.

Who Euria Is For

Euria is aimed mainly at users and companies that already rely on European infrastructure and want to avoid detours through US services. Its strength lies in its clear privacy stance and the Swiss legal framework. If you need top-tier AI answers, however, you’ll hit limits sooner. For simple chat use and privacy-conscious teams, Euria is a solid, uncomplicated starting point.

Camocopy: Place 4 (with Limitations)

Camocopy takes fourth place because you can readily accept it as a privacy baseline. Camocopy runs on EU servers and doesn’t share data with third parties in the US. Its story is also very GDPR-minded. If you focus purely on technical compliance, you can tick that box.

Why Camocopy Is Difficult

The problem is usability. The interface feels like an internal prototype that accidentally went live. If you’re coming from DentroChat or Lumo, you’ll need some time to get used to it. Camocopy is therefore an option for teams with clear privacy needs who are willing to overlook a bumpy user experience.

European AI Chats vs. ChatGPT: The Comparison

European AI chats like DentroChat have caught up with ChatGPT in many everyday tasks. Deep research, current figures, writing, code generation, working with files: in practice, the difference is hardly noticeable. Switching is now a solid alternative with a clear bonus on top: your data stays in Europe, with European companies.

Whether you’re a private user or a professional, switching couldn’t be much easier.
